Computing

Computing at Caius

Students at Caius have access to the Cambridge University Data Network (CUDN) through connections in rooms in college, plus two computer rooms at various sites throughout the college. Every student is allowed to have at least one computer in their room, though there are various policies that you must comply with for connection to the CUDN. The Computer Office are a wonderful group of people who manage the college's computing needs.

Getting started

If you are new to the college, please read this page for information on how to get your passwords and then get connected.

Computing Rooms

The main computer room is found in the basement of the Cockerell Building (the library). There are PWF connected PCs and Macs, black and white printers and a scanner.

Harvey Court also has a small Computer Room.

There is one PWF machine in the Old Courts JCR, and one which can be only used to check your hermes mail.

Policies

Read the UCS policies here.
No wireless networking is allowed outside of the Computing Services Lapwing network. Wireless networks are a large security vulnerability as they allow connection to the CUDN without physical access to a socket.
No managed routers are allowed in rooms as they interfere with the College's systems. Simple unmanaged switches are fine however.

There is a rolling bandwidth limit of 7GB in any seven day period. Going over this limit will cause a warning email to be sent to you. Any gigabyte or part thereof used between 7GB and 10GB in the period Sunday 00:01 to Saturday 23:59 will result in a charge of £5/GB. Any gigabyte or part thereof above 10GB is charged at £10/GB You can check on your bandwidth usage so far by logging onto the Caius JCR website or by downloading a GCSU bandwidth gadget (from the JCR website).

If you have any queries about computing, please contact the Computing officer.
