Martin Iacaponi

President

Hey everyone, my name's Martin Iacoponi and I'm the GCSU President. My role is to represent students' views to the college and the university, whilst also transmitting college and university news and important information back to students. I sit on lots of committees to discuss housing, food, rents and all other important issues that contribute to the great Caius student experience. It's also my job to keep the GCSU running effectively, ensuring everyone knows their roles and responsibilities and is able to carry out their duties and put their ideas into practice. By leading a team of 30 students and being the first point of contact for various college officials, I act as the channel of information and action between the two parties, and a voice for Caius at the university.

There are lots of interesting projects I hope to pursue this year, including continued improvement in the quality of hall, rejuvenation of the college bar, better library facilities, greater careers awareness and a much higher level of GCSU engagement with the student body. We are also entering a highly challenging era in higher education, and as President I must ensure that the students and college are represented in the upcoming discussions on access and widening participation.
If you have any questions or issues you would like to talk about, I'd be glad to hear from you at jcrpresident@cai.cam.ac.uk.

Gordon Beck

Vice President

As Vice President of the GCSU, I am here to ensure that everything runs smoothly, projects that the GCSU is involved in are kept going and everyone makes good on their manifesto pledges.

The key projects I envisage pushing for the 2011 executive include a continuation of hall reforms with a focus on food quality, a smooth transition back to Harvey Court and an awesome freshers week, a quick and problem free implementation of the new housing guide, better organised Week 5s in each term and clarification on rents from college.

As Vice President I work closely with the President to ensure that meetings run smoothly and GCSU members are aware of their obligations to students and act upon them.

I also write the GCSUmmary which lets students know what the GCSU do, and am available for discussions with students who feel that the GCSU should be involved in something, or isn't doing its job satisfactorily (just drop me an email!).

Roma Kanabar

Secretary

As the Secretary my main task is to ensure the GCSU stays a "well oiled machine". This involves handling most of the administrative duties including organising meetings and writing the minutes of these in order to provide accountability, but also acting as the Returning Officer when election times arrive.

This year I plan to achieve the above by: firstly, reading the Constitution which governs the running of the GCSU and ensuring that we are always operating within it. Secondly, enabling greater access to the minutes of the weekly meetings so that the students being represented can see what is being achieved. And thirdly increasing the accountability of Executive members by publicising manifesto promises and their outcomes.

If you have any questions or comments drop me an email at jcrsecretary@cai.cam.ac.uk

Kirsty Gray

Access Officer

As the Caius Access Officer, my role revolves around encouraging students to apply to Cambridge – regardless of their background – by reaching out to prospective applicants and keeping them informed. This especially involves organising Caius volunteers to help with college tours, Open Days, Summer Schools and interviews.

Education cuts mean that Access has become a real priority for Cambridge. My main priorities will be:

to spread the word about the great work that Access already does in the hope of encouraging more people to get involved

to make the most of the Access section of the GCSU website

and to make sure that schools that can’t visit Cambridge itself, still feel confident in how “the system” works

I would love to hear your ideas for how Caius Access can continue to improve and to answer any questions you might have in relation to Cambridge applications. Just send an email to jcraccess@cai.cam.ac.uk !

PiMP

Ents

As Ents officers our role is to organise bops, the GCSU garden party and other "low-key" ents. Within this we will organise the venue, cheap deals and fun themes to make your night as enjoyable as possible.

In terms of our manifesto promises we want to make ents for everyone- non-drinkers and drinkers alike, boppers and non-boppers, externally and within college. Whether this means unwinding with live music, dancing the night away at a bop or trying your knowledge at a pub quiz- we want to provide something for everyone.

We'd love to hear from you with any suggestions- for example if you would like to put on a talk we'll facilitate it and help you out. We want to provide a voting system for themes on the GCSU website- so keep a look out for that! If you have any other questions or queries don't hesitate to get in touch- jcrents@cai.cam.ac.uk

David Zhou

External Officer

As external officer, I will be the connect between Cambridge university as a whole and the GCSU. This involves going to bi-monthly Cambridge University Student Union (CUSU) council meetings and meetings with the various presidents and external officers of all of the other colleges.

In my role I will seek to communicate the wishes of Caius to the University-wide student body, ensure that Caius maximises the resources of CUSU and increase inter-college interactions.

I plan to achieve this through various policies, the full details of which can be found on my manifesto. In a brief outline, I plan to organise cross-college Bops, facilitate the hiring of CUSU equipment and provide opportunities to contact employers through CUSU.

I am the first port of call if you have any specific concerns to do with Cambridge university as a whole, therefore don’t hesitate to contact me at dz252@cam.ac.uk.

Bruno Sussat

First Year Rep

Hey! I'm Bruno, a first year engineer and your Freshers' Rep for the next year. My main job is to represent my year group - I am responsible for taking the concerns and ideas of first years' to the GCSU and for making sure that any problems within my year group are dealt with. The
organisation of Stag and Hen formal, the Easter Egg Hunt and Marriage formal are big events that I will organise in second term. I also plan to build on the college family system, which I feel is a great way of helping students to settle in.

Another big part of my role is the organisation of Freshers' Week 2012! The most important thing is making sure that the week is extremely enjoyable and has a variety of options, catering for the needs of all types of students, and in doing so, helping them to integrate in Cambridge life as smoothly as possible.

If you would like to know some more information, read my manifesto or feel free to contact me on jjbs3@cam.ac.uk or jcrfirstyearrep@cai.cam.ac.uk.

Adam Hussey & Charlie Hansom

Food and Bar Officer

Hi we're Charlie and Huss, your Food and Bar Officers.
As the name suggests, we are responsible for eating and drinking within college. The GCSU take dining within college very seriously, as can be seen by the recent improvements in the quality of food in hall. This is undeniably the result of the new feedback system that has been put into place, which ensures that you have the ability to express your views on the food served in college.

We aim to continue this improvement and want to make sure that your feedback is acted upon, so please don't hesitate in using the rating system and leave comments or email us regularly. We will be meeting head chef Tony on a weekly basis, and will strive to make your voice heard.

We are also responsible for the bar and want to make sure that students are happy in what we see as the core of the college. Caians will grow to love our beautiful bar (voted most stylish bar by The Tab). The staff are very friendly and with an enthusiasm for improvement, we want to create a buzz at the heart of the college. We aim to do this through increased publicity, including Facebook (Caius Bar) and Twitter (@caiusbar), making sure everyone is aware of what is going on in the bar. Let's bring that Friday Night feeling back with regular events throughout term, letting people unwind and soak up college atmosphere.

Most importantly, we want to know what you want! Your views are vital to the future of the bar and hall. We are passionate about using your feedback and ideas so do not hesitate to let us know.

Speak to us in person, on Facebook, or email us at jcrfood@cai.cam.ac.uk!

Sarah Daniel

Housing Officer

Hi, I’m Sarah, a second year land economist and your housing officer. My responsibility is anything related to the accommodation or facilities at Caius. There are a lot of important issues in the coming year including returning to Harvey Court and the new online ballot and housing guide. I aim to ensure that everything runs smoothly and students are kept up to date with what’s going on. In addition to these developments I also want to make sure that the housing situation for all students is as trouble-free as possible. To achieve this I hope to implement an online maintenance form so that reporting any maintenance issues is quick and easy. Obviously another important part of this role is rent negotiations. Not only do I want to make sure that rents are as fair to students as possible, I also want to look into the cost of extended rents and vacation residence to ensure that there are a number of options for students that are all fair on price.

If you have any maintenance issues or comments in general please email me at jcrhousing@cai.cam.ac.uk.

Astrid Bulmer

Junior Treasurer

Hi I'm Astrid, a first year economist and also your junior treasurer for this year. It's my job to look after the GCSU's accounts and make sure the books balance. The most important aspect of the job is distribution; the job involves allocating the GCSU's budget to the college's many clubs and societies so that each can provide a successful service to Caius students. As well as this, I make purchases on behalf of students and fund activities and events (such as bops, etc). My role as junior treasurer also involves being the go-to person for help on issues such as budgeting and student-finance related problems. It's my responsibility to keep Caians informed on how to save money at university with innovative ideas or projects, such as improving the second-hand market for things like books and bikes. Do please get in touch with any money related concerns, problems, or suggestions!

Alex Hawkins

Publicity Officer

I'm Alex, the GCSU Publicity Officer and my main responsibility is to keep everyone informed of what's going on in the GCSU, in college and also university-wide. This includes sending out regular e-mail updates, making and displaying posters, keeping the noticeboards and website content in check and generally finding the best way to publicise news and events that may be of interest to the student body.

This year, I want to make sure that all publicity is set out to you in a clear, logical and accessible way so that you don't have to waste precious time trawling through numerous e-mails and websites, but still never miss a thing! I have already set up a GCSU Facebook and Twitter page, for those who wish to receive Caius Updates in that format and over the year shall be looking at other forms of publicising, such as using the TV in the JCR to display rolling GCSU updates. I also hope to improve the categorisation of e-mail bulletins and noticeboards, developing the best format with the help of your feedback, so that you can easily find the information that's relevant to you.

So, if you ever want to publicise a play, concert, sports fixture, ent or pretty much anything you feel everyone should know about (within reason!), just send me an e-mail at jcrpublicity@cai.cam.ac.uk

Elunyd Bradshaw

Women's Officer

Hi! I'm Elunyd, a first year linguist and your Women's Officer. I'm here to fairly represent the concerns of women of Caius and any matters of gender equality. I attend the Women's Forum at the University Women's Union and communicate back to Caius the issues that they are addressing, such as the representation of women in politics or ways of coping with exam stress. This communication is vital and I aim to raise awareness of these issues within Caius by encouraging discussions and publicising events run by the Union. This year, I hope to increase easy, confidential access to pregnancy tests, rape alarms and informed services about issues such as abortion or body image. I also hope to work closely with college to ensure that you feel safe in college and around Cambridge, especially at night. I hope to develop academic support and careers advice specifically for women so look out for future events! Although my role is more political, there are many overlaps with welfare so feel free to approach me about any welfare concerns you may have. If you want to enquire about any information or would like to raise any gender equality issues please email me (jcrwomens@cai.cam.ac.uk) or catch me around college. The welfare team and I are also looking into setting up drop in sessions so look out for these too!
