GCSU Desktop

Now you don't even have to go to the GCSU website or read the e-mails to find out what's going on in Caius and the University. You can choose the subjects you want to know about - from sports to GCSU news, going out to careers - and have them delivered straight to your PC or Mac desktop, Blackberry or iPhone.

To find out how, select an option:

Windows Vista

Windows XP or earlier

Apple Mac

Apple iPhone

Blackberry or Smartphone

Windows Vista

Vista RSS

You can put your news and events straight onto your sidebar, using the "RSS gadget". Here's how...

1. Go to Start | All Programs | Accessories | Windows Sidebar. Then click on the "+" in the top right hand corner of the screen.

2. Click on "Feed Headlines" if it appears as an option (see below). If it isn't, type in "Feed Headlines" into the search box and click on the one that appears. It should appear in the Sidebar.

3. Open Internet Explorer (not Firefox or anything else) and go to http://www.caiusjcr.org.uk/news

4. Choose the types of news you want to view by clicking on each category and choosing "subscribe to this feed"

5. Now, go back to the feeds gadget and click on the "settings" button on the feeds gadget (it should be a wrench) and customise the settings you want

6. You can either have the feeds display on the sidebar, or drag it onto your main desktop - where you put it is up to you!

Now, as long as your computer is connected to the internet, you'll have regularly updating news on the subjects you want delivered straight to your computer - Enjoy!

NB You can also use the method used for Windows XP or earlier (it's just that this method is much better to use).

Windows XP or Earlier

1. If you don't have one already, you need to get an RSS reader. E-mail programs such as Outlook and Thunderbird have them, and Google Reader is good too.

2. Once you've downloaded/enabled your RSS reader, all you have to do is subscribe to the feed. This is different for whichever method you use, but your E-mail program/RSS reader should explain the steps to you (here's the Thunderbird tutorial: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Thunderbird_:_FAQs_:_RSS_Basics).
It will ask you to enter a URL for the RSS feed, here's how:

4. Choose the types of news you want to view by clicking on each category, copy the web address in the address bar (including the "http://" bit

5. Now, go back to the reader and paste it in

Now, as long as your computer is connected to the internet, you'll have regularly updating news on the subjects you want delivered straight to your reader - Enjoy!

Apple Mac (including iBook etc)

You can read your news, either using Mail, by using its built-in RSS reader (here's a really short video how: http://macmost.com/using-apple-mail-rss-reader.html) or by using a widget (here's a great one: http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/news/newsreader.html).

To subscribe to the feed on the widget or RSS reader, you'll need the URL of the feed. Here's how to do that:

Apple iPhone (including 3G)

Lucky enough to have an iPhone? If you are, you can have the latest news sent straight to your iPhone, whenever and wherever you are. Here's how

1. You'll need to get an RSS or news reader app for your iPhone. You can get one of several great ones free from the App store.

2. Then go to "add feed" and go to a href="/news">http://www.caiusjcr.org.uk/news

3. Choose the types of news you want to view by clicking on each category and then clicking on the "add feed" button for each news feed

Now, you'll have regularly updating news on the subjects you want delivered straight to your iPhone - Enjoy!

Blackberry or Windows Mobile
