Gonville & Caius Students' Union

Things to bear in mind

Packing

Note that there will be a more comprehensive list in the Fresher’s guide but we thought we’d mention a few more specific things here given the fact that you will probably have less space than most UK students and will have to consider what to pack at greater length.

Adaptors

Voltage converters- The voltage in the UK is 230V and it is worth finding out whether you will require one of these (if you are coming from the States, chances are you will).

Formal wear (We have quite a few formal occasions so a nice dress or a suit would not go a miss!)

Warm clothes for winter

A towel or two (you can buy more once you get here but you might want a couple to start off with)

Printer (there are printers in college; some people do bring their own but if you have limited space a printer is NOT essential)

Bed sheets and duvets will not be provided but can be bought in Cambridge

Plates, cups, cutlery, etc will not be provided but again these can be bought at a relatively low price once you arrive

NO pots and pans (first year’s will not have an oven/cooker so this is unnecessary)

Stationery- this can be bought in Cambridge quite easily

Visas

Although you have probably already arranged this, note that you must remember to obtain a student visa. This does not apply to EEA citizens and Swiss nationals.

If you are still unsure whether you need one, you can check here: http://www.ukvisas.gov.uk/en/doineedvisa/

NOTE: If you require a visa you MUST register with the local police station within 7 days of arrival. We will make sure that you are reminded of this and help you to get there.
