Gonville & Caius Students' Union

Tutors and Directors of Studies

Also there to help are your tutor and your director of studies (DoS). Your tutor is there to ensure that you are happy and well, your DoS is there to organise your work and make sure you are fulfilling your potential.

The advantages of speaking to your tutor far outweigh any fears you may have at speaking to someone in college administration! Like all other welfare services they are confidential, and they are particularly useful because they can intervene on your behalf in college and in the university. If you have personal worries or issues that you think may affect your work, it is very important to speak to your tutor about it; you’ll find them very sympathetic, and they can talk to your DoS or your supervisor so that these circumstances are taken into consideration.

You should particularly approach your tutor if you have any worries about finance, because they have all the information on what financial help is available to you – remember, the college has given you a place, they want to keep you here!

Since tutors are assigned randomly, some students may find they have a personality clash with their assigned tutor. Remember, YOU CAN GO AND SEE ANY TUTOR YOU LIKE. (If you have had a particularly bad experience with a tutor, please inform the GCSU, who will be able to pursue this on your behalf; Caius is very eager to ensure best practice is followed by all tutors, and this is one way to tell that all is shipshape!)

The Senior Tutor is there to coordinate and supervise the tutors in the college, and for disciplinary purposes; however, you can also go to speak to him if you would like (Senior.Tutor@cai.cam.ac.uk).
